I enjoy moving about and exploring out not just new things, but new experiences for myself and my family. I can't, sadly, claim that everyday I am so admirably motivated to be about, but when I am it leads me to beautiful sites and unique moments.
I encountered a young deer yesterday. Two actually, but it was this one in particular who shared a moment with me; two young creatures alarmed to be anything but alone in the middle of the woods. She just watched me for minutes while I fumbled on the phone with Lindsay and clumsily managed a photo or two. Then she moved on calmly. No fear in her flight, just boredom, I guess, with her neighbor.
Where she went I'm not sure, but a few blocks from work, in the midst of the city, I found my way down into a quiet and secluded creek bed. It has been dry a long time but I didn't go for water. My task was actually more convenient without water. I was there collecting colors. I made a collage of the miracle that is mother nature in an old Altoid tin that I had in my bag. It was a gift for Lindsay. Reds. Translucent orange. Green. And blue flowers. It's amazing how brilliant and varied colors can naturally come. As people we are all pretty standard, muted colors. The rest of the world, however, has no limits to their spectrum. Perhaps God made us so simple in color so that we would better appreciate the world around us.
I sure do.
I can't tell just how much I appreciate nature's resilience. How much I love that in the midst of the city I can find views absolutely unadulterated by man, and many that are almost. To find fields and forests and fallen bee hives. To be able to walk amongst them and be reminded that it's not all about money and progress. I love that escape into perfect architecture, the Lord's architecture, and quiet places to talk on the phone to my wife. I love her.
And then I love coming home to walks with my family. To an appreciation of sidewalks and the architecture of man. To relish old houses and churches. To appreciate the grandeur of old growth trees and how large they really can get. I enjoy my body and it's capacities, and being reminded by my children of little me on playgrounds so long ago.
Nolan impressed us all as he ran more than the half mile back to our truck from the playground without stopping. He has such a funny run. His legs are all over the place, but he's consistent and he proved quite a lot of endurance.
It was a beautiful night. A hilarious night. And one I am glad to have spent with the people I love best, doing some of the things that I love most.
